Internships

Internships

We are hosting legal interns or trainees who wish to complete a three-month internship at our international business law firm. Internships start throughout the year in January, April, July and October.  Because of our practice and clientele, we strongly prefer native German speakers. If you are a German law clerk (Rechtsreferendar) we encourage you to apply to spend your elective assignment (Wahlstation) with us.
You have successfully graduated from law school, or are an advanced law student, from outside the U.S. Perhaps you have also completed an exchange year or an LL.M. program in a common law jurisdiction. You have demonstrated academic excellence and perhaps already have acquired some work experience. Besides fluency in German you have a good oral and written command of the English language, and you are interested in the American legal system and in a business law practice. Basic knowledge of American law or common law generally is welcome but not required.

As an intern you will get hands-on experience with the practice of a New York law firm and the American legal system.  You will be working with senior attorneys on actual matters involving U.S. corporate and commercial law, often with cross-border aspects. You may also assist in matters involving tax law, immigration law, intellectual property or dispute resolution. Depending on your inclination and aptitude, we will give you increased responsibilities, but you will always be working under the supervision of a firm lawyer who will give you feedback on your assignments. You will have the opportunity to participate in a weekly seminar on various topics of American law. The internship is unpaid, although we cover certain expenses if you need a visa or health insurance.

Applications

Because we usually fill internship positions at least 12 months in advance we recommend that you apply early. Please send your application via email/PDF to Jascha Preuss at jpreuss@reisspreuss.com (subject line: Application Ref/Int: your first and last name). Please include: (1) cover letter (2) curriculum vitae, (3) law school transcripts, (4) at least two recommendation letters or your Arbeitszeugnisse, and (5) anything else you deem relevant.  Your cover letter and CV should be in English.  Documents written or generated by others may be in German. No photo please. We try to respond to every application, of which we get many. If we pursue your candidacy we will invite you to a phone or videoconference interview.
